In 1962 Giulio Carlo Argan presented the first edition of the IN/ARCH National Awards with the following words:
“….The in/arch awards, in addition to evidently signaling those architects who carried out a work of synthesis and final resolution of all components in the work of art, also aim to reward the entire sphere of activity and interests, at the center of which the artistic result is presented.”
This year, IN/ARCH, based in Rome, awards the architect and professor Michele Cannatà with the “alla Carriera” Award. His work, developed together with the architect and professor Fátima Fernandes, at the Cannatà & Fernandes studio, is a perfect synthesis of his Mediterranean origins and influences.
Because they are both professors at ESAP and authors of the project for our facilities, we used the words that Vincenzo Cabianca spoke in the presentation of the 1966 edition to explain the Prize and its dimension – “this prize is, above all, a system of denunciation that is made, making the upstream interrelationships evident, at the level of the causes. Therefore, the word prize needs to be specified: it is not about rewarding the best, but rather about informing the context through exceptions. That’s why we don’t say we distribute awards: we say we are tracing the panorama of the Italian condition through its architecture.”
