Digital Arts and New Media

Presentation

The Postgraduate Programme in Digital Arts and New Media has been established in response to the growing convergence between art, technology and digital culture. This programme aims to develop skills in the fields of contemporary artistic creation in dialogue with new media, offering a theoretical and practical curriculum that places equal emphasis on artistic education and links to emerging professional contexts. Understanding digital art and new media as a privileged space where artistic, technological and curatorial practices intersect, the programme is structured around an interdisciplinary approach, bringing together students with diverse interests and backgrounds.
The programme seeks to reconcile different digital languages and experimental laboratories, taking advantage of the inter-artistic environment of the Porto School of Art, in order to foster the sharing of experiences and the creation of collectively contextualised works. As such, the course is aimed at professionals and students from various fields: visual arts, performing arts, film and audiovisual arts, communication design, photography, fine and intermedia arts, comics and graphic narratives, theatre, architecture, as well as other creative and technological fields.

The curriculum is structured around six compulsory modules, which combine theoretical, practical and exhibition-based components. Students will engage with Critical Studies in Media Art, which provide a historical, ethical and theoretical framework, and with two Project Laboratories, dedicated to the development of an individual digital artefact, exploring techniques such as video art and audiovisual installation, spatial sound and soundscapes, interactivity, creative programming, immersive environments, augmented/virtual reality, video mapping and Artificial Intelligence. The course culminates in the Public Presentation Seminar / Final Exhibition, where students take on the curation and collective production of the final exhibition, publicly presenting their work.

The curriculum aims to:

• To train artists and creators in the field of digital arts and new media, with a focus on experimental and interdisciplinary practices.
• To provide in-depth knowledge of techniques, languages, concepts and critical methodologies in the field of digital art and creation;
• To facilitate interdisciplinary training, promoting links between the visual, performing and technological arts;
• To equip students with practical skills enabling them to develop original and sustainable artistic projects;
• To stimulate critical reflection on the ethics, ecology and social impact of digital production;
• To offer the opportunity to publicly present an original digital artefact within the context of a final group exhibition;
• To promote preparation for the job market in the fields of digital arts, interactive media and the creative industries, facilitating contact with professional networks, festivals and contemporary production contexts.
