“I Wanted to Be Everything” addresses the horrors of proceedings carried out in total institutions, mental asylums and prisons, which took place during periods of oppression, focusing here on Brazil, and reflects the autocratic policies that seek to eradicate any ideological or behavioural dissent from authoritarian regimes. Although such cases also occurred among men, this documentary focuses primarily on women: those compulsorily committed, falsely diagnosed as mad for defying the norms, and those who were imprisoned and persecuted by the ‘dictatorships’, victims of the horror of years of persecution, sexual violence, intimate violence and torture. I Wanted to Be Everything is a call not to forget human rights violations, a call to the duty of remembrance, so that history does not repeat itself.
