The name of the exhibition, Cold Sweats, refers to a particular condition of anxiety – a certain watchfulness, when the body, facing a specific situation such as conflict, signals towards either flight, or surrendering to the possibility of struggle and pain.
In these works, there is something primal, basic, immediate. They point to a reduction of things to their bare essentials: pencil, paper, light, colour, drawing, video. The materials and marks are minimal; the concepts, spartan; to propose and summon, starting from a kind of austerity.
Without risk and much exhibitionism, perhaps in a technically unassuming way, I wanted to propose works that would fundamentally allude to “another time”, in a more or less direct way.
I had the need to think of works that would be proposedly absent from our present day, and its efficiency in erasing that which, in a certain way, is opposed or eccentric in regards to its flows.
But it is worth noticing that these works’ voice is present, affirmative; they stand not so much in the way they were made, or for what they do, but for what they are: pieces yet to correct and align with that, for me, is instituted and predominant nowadays.
It is also in this sense that a possible richness of an open space is inscribed in these “poor” works (the drawings are literally snips…the video has no narration or heavy editing… another drawing will be made on the glass pane in the space, and then erased…).
