Text, stain, frame: the transversal in the arts

Lecture by Cristina Susigan

The coexistence of words and images—whether moving or still, in various media—is not a recent phenomenon. However, working with the coexistence of interdisciplinarity and transdisciplinarity in the arts within academia continues to be a barrier. The notion of ekphrasis, the practice of visually recreating a work of art, from Antiquity with Homer’s “The Shield of Achilles,” Keats’ “The Greek Urn,” through Wallace Stevens and his description of “The Naked Jar,” to Tracy Chevalier’s contemporary novel “Girl with a Pearl Earring,” there are many examples. This conference will attempt to provide an illuminating overview of this enchanted crossover.

This reflection forms part of the annual PVA Talks event and is promoted in the scope of TOOLBOX cycle by the Commonplace Research Line (CEAA-ESAP). Through it, we aim to consider the methodological tools employed in research cultures across different fields of knowledge, exploring the intersections and overlaps in the creation of a common ground.
