Conversations with the artist, director and researcher Luísa Sequeira and the visual artist Sama. This cycle of talks is part of the ESAP/SATH project Art Direction: Methods and Practices II.
Luísa Sequeira is a filmmaker, visual artist, researcher and cinema curator. With a PhD in Media Art, he works across different platforms, exploring the boundaries between digital and analogue. He works with collage, archive and expanded cinema. Among her works, the following stand out: “Who is Bárbara Virgínia?” and “O Que Podem as Palavras”, (co-directed with Luísa Marinho), “All Women are Maria”, “As Pioneiras do Cinema em Língua Portuguesa”, “Născută”, “Os Cravos e a Rocha”, “Memória, Feminine Noun” and “La Luna”.
He exhibited his work in several spaces, with emphasis on the Kaunas Biennial, the Cerveira Biennial, the Masc Foundation in Vienna, the São Paulo Cinemateca, the São Paulo Exhibition, the IFF Rotterdam, the Rio Festival, the Cinema Museum in London, the Tribeca Film Center, the Mindelo Cultural Center, the University of Oxford and the Simone de Beauvoir Audiovisual Center. Lately he has collaborated with TEP, with expanded cinema and video art. He made videos for the theater play “A.N.T.I.G.O.N.A” and expanded cinema and real-time image manipulation for the show “Estro/Watts”. He wrote and performed the play “Rosas de Maio”. On television, he coordinated and presented the program “Fotograma”, a magazine he created dedicated to cinema in Portuguese.
Co-founder, with the artist Sama, of Oficina Imperfeita, a space for development and art practices with an anti-hegemonic bias.
Sama is a Brazilian artist who lives and works in Portugal. His production constitutes an “Atlas”, which unfolds through languages and devices such as: Drawing, Painting, Writing, Collage, Performance, Object, Theater, Sound Art, Comics and Experimental Cinema. His interest is in the impact of mass culture on contemporary poetics, but from a peripheral and marginal point of view. Sama has participated in solo and group exhibitions in Rio de Janeiro, Belo Horizonte, Lisbon, Porto, Beja, London, Mindelo and Vienna. He is one of the artists present at the Cerveira Art Biennial this year, 2024. He has published books and zines distributed in Brazil, France and Portugal. He also makes experimental films, including the erotic-noir animation “Motel Sama”, the short transmedia “Detective Ayahuasca”, which also names an independent publication derived from the author’s universe that contains texts and comics.Shuttle What They Can as Words.
