Once again this year, ESAP is hosting the Porto Pod of the Flaherty Seminar, in partnership with Batalha-Centre of Cinema, and with the collaboration of CEAA and the Cineclube da Fábrica. From June 26 to 29, in Salaya, New Delhi, Warsaw, Porto, Lisbon, Bogotá, Toronto, New York, and Los Angeles, participants will gather daily to watch and discuss the program of the 70th Flaherty Seminar: ONWARD!

This year’s program was curated collaboratively by three past Flaherty programmers: Janaína Oliveira (2021), Carlos Gutiérrez (2007), and Richard Herskowitz (1987, 1990, 1999, and 2004). The program remains secret until each session begins, and each screening is always followed by a conversation. At the Porto Pod, the sessions and discussions will feature local guests: Kitty Furtado, Nuno Lisboa, Filipa César, and Ritó Natálio.

One thing about Flaherty is persistent: discussion. Everyone seems to disagree about what Flaherty was, is, or should be. These debates are never fully resolved, always opening up films and ideas to an as-yet-unimagined future. After all, it’s the often-contentious conversations between people who share ideas about cinema, politics, and art that keep Flaherty unsettled, vibrant, and alive. Never stuck in its legacy, never inert, Flaherty isn’t defined solely by its history—because, as Erik Barnouw once declared, it has only one goal: ONWARD. — Patty Zimmermann

Attendance at the ESAP sessions is free and open to the public (subject to capacity), but registration guarantees access to all sessions and activities (at both ESAP and Batalha – Centre of Cinema), as well as the Flaherty Online Experience.
