Words and Gestures

A talk with Catarina Real, creator whose practice forms at the intersection of painting, writing and choreography. This event takes place within the scope of the Artistic Practices Laboratory of the Master’s Degree in Visual Arts.

Catarina Real (1992, Barcelos) works at the intersection of artistic practice and theoretical research in the expanded fields of painting, writing and choreography, mostly in long-term collaborative projects that focus on the question of how we can live better collectively.

She is a PhD candidate at the Centre for Humanistic Studies at the University of Minho, with research that intersects art, love and capital. She maintains a practice of commentary – in the form of reflective texts, introductory texts to exhibitions, interviews and moderation of conversations – on the works and processes carried out by artists in her generation, with the intention of contributing to a healthy environment of collective and community criticism and creation. She has been vice-president of the French association Artistes en Résidence since 2019 and editor at Edições da Ruína since 2022.

She has publicly presented her work at institutions such as Teatro Municipal do Campo Alegre, Galeria Municipal do Porto, Museu Amadeo de Souza-Cardoso, etc.; independent spaces such as Rua do Sol, Campanice, Graciosa, Laboratório das Artes, Sol Pele, etc.; and galleries such as Kubik Gallery, Galeria Madragoa, no.no Gallery and Galeria Graça Brandão. He has held residencies at Espaço do Tempo, Gnration, Appleton Square, Fórum Dança, Artistes en Résidence, etc. His most recent projects include the organization, in collaboration with David Revés, of the series of talks and podcasts Amor e Morte with the participation of different guests from the Portuguese cultural scene; the residency at Residency Unlimited (US) with a grant from Atelier Museu Júlio Pomar; the exhibition Things I’ve Seen in duo with Gonçalo Duarte at Flux Factory (US) and the book “ISTO” published by Edições Senhor Teste.
