On June 27, at 9:30 p.m., ESAP students, directed by Margarida Machado and Patrícia Franco, will present a musical adaptation of The Awakening of Spring.
DESPERTAR is based on Spring Awakening, an 1891 play by Frank Wedekind, and the rock musical of the same name with music by Duncan Sheik and libretto and lyrics by Steven Sater.
Set in a German town at the end of the 19th century, the musical tells the story of teenagers discovering the inner and outer turmoil of their sexuality. The implications of this realization are painful and tragic in a conservative, moralistic and patriarchal society. It is a critique of German society, which at the time had a culture that oppressed sexuality and is a living dramatization of erotic fantasies. Because of this, the play was often censored, but it gained explosive energy in the musical format adapted for Broadway in 2006, and has since had several revivals around the world.
